Human Capital Development and Job Performance in Selected Oil and Gas Firms in Lagos State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between human capital development and job performance in selected Oil and Gas firms in Lagos State, Nigeria. The absence of needed skills and worker knowledge required to work and achieve organisational goals is one of the most significant difficulties plaguing modern enterprises today. As a result, there is a need to develop employee capacity so that they can provide output that is effective and efficient, allowing the organisation to utilise employees' abilities and skills fully. Although this topic has a plethora of literature, there are some inconsistencies in the findings. As a result, there is a pressing need to broaden the frontiers of knowledge in this field by embedding it in typical Oil and Gas firms in Nigeria. Specifically, the study aimed to accomplish the following objectives: to examine the relationship between training and employee innovativeness, to examine the relationship between employee career advancement and employees satisfaction, and explains factors inhibiting human capital development in oil and gas firms. A survey research technique was used in this study. The study’s population was 680, while the sample size stood at 252, which was determined using the formula of Taro Yamane. A structured questionnaire was the research instrument used in the study. Content validity was used to validate the research instrument. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was employed to assess the scales of measurement's reliability. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Pearson moment product of correlation was used to analyse the relationship between human capital development (training and employee career advancement) and job performance (employee innovativeness and employees satisfaction). The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant relationship between training and employee innovativeness at r = 0.728. Further, the results showed significant relationship between employee career advancement and employees’ satisfaction at r = 0.633. It was concluded that human capital development helps the organisation to maintain and improve productivity, performance and survival abilities. It was recommended that organisations should foster a favorable working atmosphere where employees can further their education. In addition, management should make every effort to organize refresher courses and fund workers for additional training in order to improve their abilities. Investing in an employee's education allows them to develop in the organisation and work in more advanced positions.
